What makes this birthday book different from a name-swap book?

You may already own one personalized book: a pre-written story with the name in the blanks and an avatar picked from a menu of hair and skin tones[2]. It lasted a week. Me the Star writes a new story from a moment that actually happened this year, with your kid drawn from a photo you upload[1].

A birthday is a good excuse for something else: a record of the year they just had. The summer they finally let go of the side of the pool. The hamster they named after a bus driver. The morning they explained to you, slowly, how the moon works. That is the book, and their face is on every page of it.

How is a personalized birthday book made?

Three things from you, and a narrated book is on screen in under five minutes[1]: one photo, one moment, and the age your kid is turning. What follows is reading, fixing, and deciding whether it earns a print.

  1. One photo of your kid

Any clear photo of their face from this year. We build a private likeness sheet from it, face, hair and skin tone, and reuse that sheet on every page, so the kid at the cake on the first spread is the same kid on the last[1].

App screen: Meet Sofia, your AI character is ready
  2. One moment from the year

Two or three sentences in your own words. What happened, who was there, what they said. The story is written from that, for the age you give.

App screen: reading a finished book aloud on a tablet
  3. Read it, fix it, print it

The finished book is narrated aloud in the app. Rewrite any line, redraw any page, and print only what you want on the shelf[1]. Every printed book passes a human reviewer and an automated likeness check before it goes to the press[1].

What does a personalized birthday book cost?

Reading is free. Every kid gets five stories at no charge, saved to your library for good, with no credit card[1]. The $39 is for the hardcover, and you pay it only after you have read the whole book and decided it deserves a shelf[1].

When should you order a birthday book?

You know the date, which makes this the easy one. The book is on screen in minutes; the hardcover takes 5 to 7 business days by standard ground in the contiguous US[1]. Approve the print two weeks before the birthday and it is on the table with a margin.

If the birthday is this weekend, make the free version anyway. Read it on a phone at breakfast on the day, then let the hardcover arrive the week after, when the balloons are down and a present is a surprise again.

  • Three to four weeks out: upload the photo, write the moment, read the first draft. Rewrites and redraws are free.
  • Two weeks out: approve the pages and print. That covers the 5 to 7 business days with room for a slow week.
  • The birthday: the hardcover on the table, or the narrated version on a phone if you started late.

Which moments make the best birthday story?

The birthday itself is a poor subject, mostly because it has not happened yet. The year behind it is the material. Pick one thing from it that only your family would know, and give the writer the details: where it was, what they said, what went wrong.

  • The first that happened this year: the bike, the deep end, the lost tooth, the sleepover they came home from early.
  • The thing they were obsessed with for a month that nobody else understood.
  • The pet, the stuffed animal or the imaginary friend, by name.
  • A phrase they say that you have started saying too.
  • The thing they were scared of in January and are not scared of now.

Write it however it comes out, in three sentences or thirty. The story keeps what you gave it and fits the rest to their age, so a book for a kid turning three and a book for a kid turning nine, about the same lost tooth, read like different books.

Questions parents ask

Can the book be about the birthday party itself?

It can, if you make it after the party: describe what happened and the book becomes the record of it. Before the party, the better subject is the year that led up to it, since the story is written from something that actually took place.

What age is a personalized birthday book right for?

The story is written for the age you give, so a book for a kid turning two reads very differently from one for a kid turning eight. The illustrations come from the same single photo either way, with the same face kept on every page.

Can I put their age or the birthday number in the story?

Yes. The moment is yours to write, so "the summer Leo was four" goes in as you wrote it. If a line comes out wrong, rewrite it in the app before you print. Rewrites and redraws are free.

How fast can I have it?

The narrated book is on screen in under five minutes for most parents. The printed hardcover ships from Pennsylvania by standard ground in 5 to 7 business days within the contiguous US, so start two weeks before the date to be safe.

Can I make a new one every birthday?

Yes. Each year's book is written from that year's moment, and the likeness sheet keeps the same face, the same hair and the same age on every page of it. Five stories per kid are free, then $39 a print, or $29 on any plan.

What happens if the print is not right?

Every printed book has a 14-day happiness guarantee. If the print quality or the drawing of your kid is not right, you get a reprint at no cost or a full refund, your choice.

Do I have to pay to read it?

No. The finished book, narrated, is free to read in the app. Five free stories per kid, no credit card. You pay $39 only if you decide to print the hardcover.
